4th October 2015, Men’s Sunday Lazarou League, Pontcanna Fields
Victory at last! All the hard work and promise shown by the Sunday League squad finally bore fruit after an eventful battle of undulating fortunes.
The Dragons had the lion’s share of first-half chances—including a well-saved penalty—but were slightly relieved to enter the break level after the visitors struck the woodwork with the last kick. A caution for Mehdi also placed the threadbare squad under pressure, and matters worsened when Liam was forced off with injury before the hour, reducing us to ten men.
But the team rallied, some gritty midfield ball-winning and the introduction of Dan’s pace producing a 2-0 lead with less than a quarter of the game remaining. The visitors, with their numerical advantage taking full effect, appeared to have seized control after levelling, but the Dragons had enough in the tank to provide the decisive twist, Fudge slamming the ball home after Dan (minutes after completing a half marathon!) had tied the defence in knots once again. A determined rearguard action for the last few minutes secured the three points to widespread jubilation.
Congratulations to Anthony for managing, Amos for running the line and fielding the verbals, and to all the players who turned out to achieve this historic result; and to those that didn’t make it—be there next time! Just think what we can achieve with a full squad.
Onwards and upwards!
