At the Dragons, we know how difficult it can be to pluck up the courage to join a new club; it can be a bit scary coming along and meeting people for the first time. We’ve all got our own personal stories about how we joined the Dragons, so we thought we’d share a few in the hope that some of you might be inspired to come along and join us too!
Home town: Cardiff
”I was shy and nervous joining a new club, I had played football for a few different teams before – 5 a side and 11’s, women only teams, and a team with all men apart from myself. Unfortunately some of these teams hadn’t been very welcoming.
I hadn’t played for a few years and this team stands out because I was immediately warmly welcomed at training and encouraged a lot. I liked meeting new LGBT people. I enjoyed being able to play in community lower level games and training as there was less pressure and more emphasis on learning and fun.
I really like that it’s a mixed team, it makes for a good atmosphere and the club provides opportunities to play with a variety of people and at different competitive levels.
Most of all I especially like the ethos and purpose of the club in that everyone is welcome and it’s a safe place for LGBT players. It feels great to be a part of something quite unique.”
