A good week all round for Cardiff. First Cardiff City make the play off final in a very tense penalty shoot out victory over Leicester, and then more importantly Cardiff Dragons win 8-4 against local rivals Bristol Panthers!! An excellent day was had on Sunday and saw the Dragons produce their highest goal tally to date. Well done to everyone on the day. (see football news for more).

This weekend will see the Dragons heading up to Birmingham for the last GFSN league fixture of the season. Good luck to all those travelling up, let’s have a big push to end the season in style!!

Football News

Sunday 16th May – Friendly – Bristol Panthers 4-8 Cardiff Dragons in Bristol

The Dragons visited Bristol for a 11’s match for the first time and ran out victorious in the return fixture between the clubs following on from the game in Cardiff earlier in the year.

…..The opening goal however did arrive soon after following another Dragons attack when Stefan finished low into the corner on 15 minutes after being set up by Kris L. The visitors lead however lasted barely five minutes as a Bristol player was first to a corner to finish clinically from close in. …..It was the Dragons who got the next goal on 35 minutes when ….. persistence from Mark saw him hold off a defender and round the keeper to finish from a tight angle. A third goal for the visitors ensued before half time as Mark again finished well from 12 yards following a ball in from the right from Sam.

In the second half….The hosts paid the price for this miss as the Dragons went straight up the other end to make it 4-1 when Anthony scored his debut 11’s goal for the club finishing well with a volley at the back post latching onto a cross from Stefan. At this stage the game looked all but won but Bristol were given a lifeline with two goals in quick succession first from a penalty awarded for handball and then when the Dragons gifted them a goal failing to clear from their 6 yard area. The visitors however soon regained their composure and the initiative with Mark capping a fine display with 3 further goals in ten minutes. ….Dave F did find the target moments later with a fine curling shot from 25 yards out to complete an 8-4 victory for the Dragons….

Football News

Summer Break – This summer we will be doing things a bit differently. We will be taking a break from organised football training throughout June and starting pre-season training at the beginning of July. We will still be putting on sessions, so there will still be The Dragons through the summer at the same times. What we will probably do is either meet up and just have a game or play some fun football. We may also play a few other sports, or go to some mystery locations for a kick-about. We may even do some football skills. All suggestions welcome.

Up-Coming Training – It makes sense that through the summer we should try to improve our fitness in preparation for next season and as you may be aware by now, quite a few Dragons will be also be taking part in the Cardiff Half Marathon in October. So if people are interested, on Tuesday nights during the summer we would like to offer to put a fitness session on Tuesday night. This could involve a couple of activities such as going for a cycle, swim and will likely include going for a run along various routes around Cardiff. It would be interesting to hear what people think on this idea?

31st July – 8th August – Gay Games – Cologne

The registration deadline for this tournament is in 14 days, if you are interested in taking part in a prestigious international club tournament in Germany, it is important that you let Murray or Jason know as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
