Dragons Weekly Bulletin – 15th September 2010

To start this week I would like to welcome the newest members of our Dragons family; Rachel, Karen, Neil, Connor and Simon. It was great to see you guys down on Sunday.

Football News

This weekend saw the first Dragons Open Day, where potential new members were invited to come and meet us at Pontcanna for Sunday training. On Sunday we welcomed Rachel, Karen, Connor, Simon and Neil to their first training session. Everybody hopes they enjoyed their day and look forward to seeing them again at future training, matches and social events.

This Thursday will be the final summer evening training session which unfortunately signifies that we are near the start of the winter . We are looking to either book Sophia Gardens as per last year or booking 5-a-side. What are your preferences and what time would best suit you? (email muzz on

Upcoming Matches

Sunday 19th September 2010 – GFSN League – Cardiff Dragons vs Brighton Bandits – Cardiff – 11am

Last November, The Dragons historically won their first ever GFSN League match in Brighton, 1-0 against the Bandits. After a tough summer which nearly saw the exit of Brighton Bandits from the GFSN League, The Bandits are back and will be out for revenge, looking to overturn last years result. This seasons meeting promises to be a fascinating encounter whether playing or supporting.

Availability for this match is now closed. Watch out for an e-mail later in the week.

Sunday 26th September 2010 – SW League – Exeter Lions vs Cardiff Dragons – Exeter

This match sees the first meeting of Cardiff Dragons and Exeter Lions and the first of our 4 South-West League fixtures. Exeter will be looking to carry on their good form after recently beating Trowbridge Tigers 2-1 in the GFSN Cup.

This match will be a development match for The Dragons and we will be giving everybody the chance to play competitively.

2 weeks ago I said that this match was at home, it is actually away, a new form is attached or drop Murray a line to confirm you are still available.

Please could everybody fill out an availability form if they wish to play and make your decisions on your plan for the day early in order to help things get organised. An availability form is attached and should be returned to Murray (

Football Tip of the Week

Good one this week

Committee News

We had a long committee meeting on Sunday with lots of important decisions made so please read. Minutes will soon be available on the website. To start amessage from the Chairman, Dave Kelly;

“Hi Dragons! Well, what a few weeks it’s been!  From the fun of the Fundraiser to our fantastic Mardi Gras event, the high of Bristol to the our disappointment in Leicester, we’ve experienced the whole run of Dragons emotions over the last month.

Firstly, this is a huge, huge thanks to everyone who took part in both the fundraiser and Mardi Gras for the club. As you know, money and people are required to make any club a success, and these events generated both in abundance! We raised almost £400 from the fundraiser, we’ve donated £120 to the Terrence Higgins Trust from all of this year’s fundraising activities, and we gained 40 potential new members for the club! The biggest thanks must always go to Jon B, who (as our finance and fundraising secretary) organised and ran both events with extreme professionalism. Well done!

It’s important with all the good that’s going on within the club that we all focus on making sure the basics are going well. Something the club needs everyone’s help with is making sure our assets are protected. We currently have a SUBSTANTIAL kit shortage for pieces that haven’t been returned after matches, and we’re going to have to replace them if they aren’t returned before this weekend. The current bill to replace missing kit is running to approximately £140, money that has to be taken directly from that which would otherwise be used for training, match fees, reducing subs or away travel, etc. We are missing two blue and two red shirts, plus several pairs of shorts and socks; if you have any kit that belongs to the club, please heed this amnesty!! From this Sunday’s match on, there will be a much tighter system used to control the issue and return of kit.

Now, to the future. Following on from the first full committee meeting of the season on Sunday, a few key decisions have been made that will affect the membership. The two that stand out as those that most affect everyone are the restriction of membership to those over-18 and the reduction of away subs to £4 (more about this later). It is crucial that you read the meeting minutes to understand our reasoning behind each of these decisions – which will soon be on the revamped website – however, if anyone has any questions immediately, please feel free to discuss them with me directly. After the next meeting, we’ll also be letting you know details about a new player code of conduct, which will incorporate aspects of the GFSN league rulebook, which is available from the league website and you absolutely need to have read if you play in league or cup matches.

Finally: have a great week, and… GO DRAGONS!

Next onto some good news from our treasurer Dave Keith;

+++ Change to Subs Policy +++

As you all know, members were consulted recently about how the money collected at fundraising events should be used. One popular response to the survey was to use funds raised to reduce subs. At our Committee Meeting yesterday, we therefore approved a proposal that player matchday subs for this season be reduced to £4 per person. This takes effect from this Sunday’s game against Brighton. The reduced rate will apply to all home and away matches thereafter. Training subs remain at £2 per person.

The reduction reflects our policy of using funds raised at events like the recent Player Auction to cover the costs of things that you, the members, want. Please therefore continue to get involved in supporting the Fundraising Team’s efforts. The more we raise, the more we can feed back benefits to everyone.

There are more exciting uses for the funds in the pipeline, so keep an eye on your weekly emails over the next few weeks for further announcements.

Following on from comments from our members we have decided that from now on;
No non-player is to be in the changing rooms before or after matches unless at the managers discretion (e.g. assistant manager).
As well as this after match, priority for food served is to go to those who have played first, before supporters.
If you have any comments to make regarding this or wish to discuss it please grab a member of the committee who will be more than happy to help.

Press and Marketing

Over the next few weeks we will be looking to get player profiles for the website. The first set of photos for these were taken on Sunday with more to follow. Keep an eye out from an email from Jordan with the questions for the profiles and watch out on for when these go live.

Fantasy Football

Well done to Stef for maintaining top position in the Fantasy Football with a 20 point gap opening up. also well done to Dave Keith for being this weeks highest scorer with 59 points. I would also like to take this opportunity to point out that our very own manager, Muzz, is currently in 19th out of 20!!

You can still join the league, go to, enter a team (or use your old details) and enter the Cardiff Dragons league. The passcode is 311478-81139 but if you were in this league last year it should enter you automatically.

Muzz is, however, redeeming himself with the Championship fantasy football. He is currently joint top with Jason C Go to, enter a team and then join the Cardiff Dragons FC league, pin is 834.

As always, have an awesome week!!

Go Dragons!!!
