Cardiff Dragons FC were recently invited to take part in a new LGBT Sports Network which has been initiated by Sport Wales to create a sporting community where LGBT individuals feel safe, welcome and free from discrimination.
National Governing Bodies of Sport, Cardiff Mardi Gras, Cardiff City FC Supporters’ Trust, Cardiff Lions and Stonewall Cymru are all represented on this network and is the first time such parties have all sat around the same table to discuss LGBT issues. The network is in its early stages, however, sitting around the table with the likes of the Welsh Rugby Union, the FAW, Welsh Athletics, Welsh Netball and Welsh Cycling to name a few shows the interest and early commitment that governing bodies are taking in the LGBT community.
Sport Wales are leading the initiative and have proposed an “LGBT Sport Charter” which they are inviting comment on. You can download this document and give your personal feedback on the document to Ali Mahoney (firstname.lastname@example.org) who is coordinating responses from the club to feedback to Sport Wales. Specifically, Sport Wales are asking:
- If the Charter really demonstrates the commitments we have to tackling homophobia and transphobia in sport
- If those signing the Charter can support, in whatever way they can, the delivery of these commitments
- If there is anything missing or needs to be removed from the Charter
- Of any other comments or suggestions you may have
Please feel free to give your comments to Ali by 1st May.
