Copa Lucrecia Tournament

Dragons Score for Nicaragua in Copa Lucrecia

Women’s 5-a-side, Ashton Park, Bristol

22nd May 2016

Fresh from their Parisian adventures, Cardiff Dragons women showed the benefit of their experience with a strong display in the Copa Lucrecia.

This annual tournament in aid of social, educational and healthcare projects in Nicaragua—played out amid Latin American music and freshly-cooked spicy treats in the beautiful, chilled-out atmosphere of Bristol’s Ashton Park—is becoming an attractive regular fixture for the Dragons, and the ladies certainly did the club proud on this occasion, winning their first three fixtures and hitting the net in every game.

Debut competitive goals for Leanne and Laia complemented another impressive haul of nine from Charlotte, including two hat-tricks. The defeat of Casual League sparring-partners Easton Cowgirls—one of a pair of clean-sheets for Megan R in goal—was particularly satisfactory, and a victory in their final group game would have seen the ladies through to the knockout stages.  Unfortunately, their opponents were a team from Bristol City academy, who only just showed too much nous in a creditable 2-1 defeat for the Dragons. Nevertheless, the team spirit, continued growth in confidence and technical progress, and of course the enthusiastic singing from the touchlines had everyone involved looking forward to next season’s Casual League in eager anticipation.

Congratulations to Charlotte on winning the Dragon of the Day vote, and thanks to Muzz, Anthony, Darrin, Sandy, Donna, and Aris for their support, and to Ryan for management and lyrics.
