Birmingham Blaze 6 – 1 Cardiff Dragons

The Dragons travelled to Birmingham on a very hot day for their final League fixture against Blaze. The Dragons battled hard in the heat but were well beaten on the day finding it hard going with a reduced squad and some first team regulars missing.

The opening 15 minutes did not provide much in the way of chances as both teams found it hard to settle on a dry and thus bouncy pitch. The breakthrough however came for the home team just after the quarter hour mark when they were awarded a penalty awarded for a push. This gave the Blaze extra confidence and they created further chances one of which resulted in their second goal finished well with a neat chip over the onrushing keeper. The Dragons did their best to reduce the arrears having a lot of play in the Blaze half and forcing a few corners but they struggled to fashion any clear chances. The nearest they came was when one of these corners was swung in with pace by Anthony but just evaded the onrushing players at the back post. With no further goals Blaze went into half time 2-0 ahead.

The second half began poorly for the visitors and any chance of a route back into the game was soon dashed with two blaze goals in the opening 10 minutes. The first came when the hosts broke quickly on the counter attack and their forward turned his marker and finished low into the corner. The second goal was an opportunist effort scored when the Dragons failed to clear from inside their area. The Dragons however were still having a lot of territory in their opponents half and the last half hour was their best part of the game. Kris L had two good chances following excellent through balls but the first was well blocked and the second went wide of the far post. The visitors also won a free kick on the edge of the box but Chris C’s effort was blocked by the wall.  Blaze were still making chances of their own as the game became very open as players tired in the heat and added further goals with first a good weaving run and then a deflected shot. The Dragons then scored a deserved consolation when Muzz shot home from the edge of the area following two blocked efforts from Luke and Anthony to complete the scoring as Blaze ended victorious by 6-1. Thanks to Jeremy of the Willdcats and Richie for helping out and supporting on the day.
