What a long weekend!!! Saturday was Mardi Gras. The Dragons were out in force promoting the club. We had a stall which gathered lots of interest (albeit, a lot was about Amos’ sheep!!) We also had a friendly kick about with people outside, with Christian conceding a lot of goals against a 2 year old!!

We had an amazing 30 people sign up for more information about the club and to show an interest in coming along to training this Sunday. Hopefully most will come along and it would be great if all of us are there to show them what the club is about. You never know, one of them could be the next Ronaldo!! A massive thank you to John B, Jordan and everyone who helped out on the day.

Sunday saw us travel up to Leicester for the annual Leicester six a side tournament. Both teams applied themselves well and were unlucky not to make it out of their groups. A big thank you to all those who travelled, especially the drivers, many of whom were out on the Saturday at Mardi Gras. See football news for more details.

Over the next few weeks we will be looking to get player profiles for the website. Jordan plans to start taking photos for these at Sundays training session so make sure you make yourself look pretty!!

Over the coming weeks, we will be looking to revamp the weekly email. What would you like to see? How would you like it set out? Please send your thoughts to myself ( secretary@cardiffdragonsfc.co.uk ) All comments are welcome.

On Sunday The Dragons attended the 10th Leicester 6-a-side Tournament. The Dragons huffed and puffed but both teams failed to get through the group stages, the Reds finishing 3rd in Group C and the Blues finishing 6th in Group A

This weekend sees the first Dragons Open Day, where potential new members will be invited to come and meet us at Pontcanna for training. Following Saturday’s Mardi Gras, we took around 30 new contacts so hopefully a few will be able to come and join us.

Last November, The Dragons historically won their first ever GFSN League match in Brighton, 1-0 against the Bandits. After a tough summer which nearly saw the exit of Brighton Bandits from the GFSN League, The Bandits are back and will be out for revenge, looking to overturn last years result. This seasons meeting promises to be a fascinating encounter whether playing or supporting.

Please could everybody fill out an availability form if they wish to play and make your decisions on your plan for the day early in order to help things get organised. An availability form is attached and should be returned to Murray (footballmanager@cardiffdragonsfc.co.uk).

Sunday 26th September 2010 – SW League – Exeter Lions vs Cardiff Dragons – Exeter

This match sees the first meeting of Cardiff Dragons and Exeter Lions and the first of our 4 South-West League fixtures. Exeter will be looking to carry on their good form after recently beating Trowbridge Tigers 2-1 in the GFSN Cup.

This match will be a development match for The Dragons and we will be giving everybody the chance to play competitively.

Last week I said that this match was at home, it is actually away, a new form is attached or drop Murray a line to confirm you are still available.

Social

Saturday 2nd October – Rock climbing at Boulders indoor centre (Newport Road)

This is an alternative to the Go-Ape (which is quite expensive but details below) and will provide great team-building opportunities. This is an indoor venue just off Newport Road. The plan is to go down in the afternoon and it will cost about £12 per person – Details TBC closer to the time.

Friday 22nd October – Ten Pin Bowling (Cardiff Bay)

The last time we went bowling we had a great time; this is a fun and relaxed evening. Details and times will be confirmed closer to the time and we will book an alley (or 2). If you are interested please let me know so we can gauge interest.

Wales Qualifier Match

Jason Cousins (Local GFSN Regional Representative) will liaise with the GFSN and try to organise an official GFSN event where hopefully we can get some regions down to visit us; this will be great as we will get to see some familiar faces and show everyone how friendly us Welsh are and a good time!!! This is likely to be for the October qualifiers. Keep an eye out for communications on this; as soon as we hear back from Jason/GFSN you shall be informed.

Go-Ape

This can go ahead if you wish but we need your commitment if this is to go ahead. Having researched into this and it costs £30 per person and would be a perfect team building opportunity. The only thing is that they need full payment upon booking and they cannot give us a date until we book. If you would like to go please let me know but note we will require full payment before we book and it is only then that we would be able to supply a date; as you can see there are complications around confirming this event but I am willing to go ahead with it if there is enough interest/commitment shown.

Fundraising

Firstly I’d like to thank all members for taking part and attending the recent Player Auction and Mardi Gras activities. So far we have manged to raise £480.08 since I took on the post. Dave Keith has provided a break down of what what we have achieved.
Car Boot £54.50 Easyfundraising £19.61 May Lotto £9.00 June Lotto £11.00 Jul/Aug Lotto £8.50 Aug Fundraiser £377.47 Total raised = £480.08 25% of this will be going to THT. Dave Keith has written a cheque to them for £120.02 which he will be sending shortly.

There is a committee meeting next week. I have asked Dave Kelly to agenda spending as an item. I will be taking the results of the fundraising questionnaire that was emailed to you all a few weeks ago so that we can identify areas where money raised can be spent.

Thanks

Fantasy Football

With it being an International week no change in then fantasy football this week.

You can still join the league, go to fantasy.premierleague.com, enter a team (or use your old details) and enter the Cardiff Dragons league. The passcode is 311478-81139 but if you were in this league last year it should enter you automatically.

This year we have also set up a Championship Fantasy Football League. Currently topping the table is Jason C although it is tight at the top with just three points separating the top three. Go to fantasy.football-league.co.uk, enter a team and then join the Cardiff Dragons FC league, pin is 834.

As always, have an awesome week!!

That time of year is upon us again, when thousands of people will descend on Cardiff tomorrow for Mardi Gras!

This will be the 3rd year that the Dragons will be in attendance, and this is our biggest year yet!

The plan is to meet at the Kings Cross at 11am, and then have a gentle wonder over to Coopers field where the Dragons have a stall this year.

We’ll be using the stall to advertise and recruit new members, and generally have a good time.

A few of us will be over the field early getting the stall set up, and we’ll be manning it throughout the day. Drop by to say hello

We’ll be wearing the Dragons tops around Mardi Gras again. We’ll have some tops with us, but it’ll be a great chance to wear your own top if you have one.

If you have any questions, drop one of us a message, or a quick text.

Otherwise, see you all tomorrow, and let the good times commence!

Tournament Report – Leicester 6’s Sunday 5th September 2010

The Dragons once again were up bright and early to head for Leicester in force with 16 players travelling to make up the 2 Dragons teams, Dragons Blue and Dragons Red. A big thanks to the drivers and all who made the trip. Thanks also to James Nelson who joined the Dragons for the day playing for the blue team.

Dragons Red - The Reds were unfortunate not to progress from their group of 6 with 2 wins, 1 draw and 2 losses from their 5 games missing out by 1 point to finalists Nottingham who’s 1-0 victory over us proved crucial. Despite a slow start the team played much attractive football on the day scoring 5 goals in the process. Unusually the games were quite long at 15 minutes and with large pitches and small goals most games in the competition did not see many goals scored. The Reds however created many opportunities scoring 5 well worked goals in their final 3 games scored by Mark (3), Anthony and Crispin with a fine turn and shot for his debut goal. Everyone gave full commitment to the cause and did the Club proud on the day.

Dragons Red – Murray Harvey (manager), Anthony Read (captain), Kris Llewellyn, Edwin Lyons, Crispin Seabrook, Mark Biggs, Dave Fry and Jordan Wall.

Results -

Dragons Reds 0 Nottingham1 1

Dragons Reds 0 Trowbridge 0

Dragons Reds 2 Leicester Yellows 0

Dragons Reds 1 Exeter 0

Dragons Reds 2 Birmingham2 3

Dragons Blue - In a very tough group the Blues battled hard throughout to gain 2 draws against Leicester Reds and Bristol but fell short of progression. This however was an improvement from last year in terms of points gained and also in the number of goals conceded, only 5 in their 6 games. Due to an extra team in the group the game duration was 10 minutes rather than 15. Two players James and Adam made their debuts for the Dragons on the day, very well played guys. There was a good commitment and desire to do well from everyone and despite many of the team not having played together as a squad before there was some nice football played at times and we were unfortunate not to score a goal or two from the chances we created. A mention to Dave Amos who was once again outstanding in between the posts in all our games. A valuable experience and learning curve for all those involved.

Dragons Blue- Jason Cousins (manager), Dave Amos, Christian Jones, Jerry Bull, Stefan Morgan, John Ainsley, James Davidson, Adam Jones and James Nelson

Results -

Dragons Blues 0 Mersyside1 1

Dragons Blues 0 Leicester Reds 0

Dragons Blues 0 National Grid 2

Dragons Blues 0 Bristol 0

Dragons Blues 0 Birmingham1 1

On Sunday we will held a fundraising night at the Kings Cross. everyone had an excellent night and we managed to raise £377.47. A massive effort went in from everybody but a special thank you has to go to John B. I saw first hand the amount of time and effort that went in to organising the night and he should be commended for this. Also a massive thank you to our brave boys who got auctioned off and to Jason for what looked a very painful waxing experience. Also, thank you to Crispin and Jordan for helping out and to Jamie J for his fantastic hosting of the night.

Following on from the fundraiser, this Saturday will see the Dragons at Mardi Gras in Coopers field. We have a stall booked for this and this will be the main focus of our afternoon, but we will be asking as many people as possible to attend and represent the Dragons. Last year was an awesome day out, culminating in a friendly match against the police. If anyone is interested in helping out and talking to the locals and generally talking about the club please get in touch with anyone on the committee. Also, a big thank you to our poster boys and girls. Look out for the posters at the Kings Cross.

Over the coming weeks, we will be looking to revamp the weekly email. What would you like to see? How would you like it set out? Please send your thoughts to myself ( secretary@cardiffdragonsfc.co.uk ) All comments are welcome.

Football News

News

This week The Dragons will be travelling to Leicester for their 10th annual 6-a-side tournament. Last year was The Dragons first appearance in this competition, team 1 missing out on the semi-finals on penalties after a good showing. Team 2 played well and had a great team spirit, but failed to emerge from the groups. This year we have 2 teams again and we will be aiming to bring the trophy back to Cardiff. Applications for this event are now closed. We will be sending out a communication later in the week. Registration begins at 10am.

Following last weeks 6-1 win over Bristol Panthers in the GFSN Cup Group South, the full match report is now up on the website.

The Dragons will be competing in their second Leicester tournament after a good showing last year. Team 1 got knocked out in the quarter-finals by Village Manchester on penalties, while team 2 performed really well with an excellent team-spirit, but were unfortunately unable to qualify from a tough group.

This tournament is the day after Mardi-Gras and as we have to confirm how many teams we are taking, we would ask members to consider this properly and decide on their availability as soon as they can so that we can guarantee places for everybody.

This event is now closed to applications. An e-mail will follow later in the week.

TEAM: STARTING LINE UP – Kris, Jason, Christian, Muzz (Manager), Dave F, Anthony (Capt) Ed, Sam, John A, Jacobo, Mark.

Subs: Aris, Simon, Daren.

In an absolutely storming performance the Dragons ran out 6-1 winners in their GFSN cup match against the Panthers, in their first competitive game of the season.

In the first 15 minutes the Dragons piled the pressure on the Panthers goal forcing a number of corners with Mark, Anthony, Jacobo and Ed coming very close with efforts on goal.

It was only a matter of time before all the pressure paid off and on 20 minutes and 25 yard thunder bolt from Jacobo broke the duck 1-0 Dragons. On 25 minutes Kris was called into action making and excellent save low to his right. On 28 mins Muzz had a shot that was inches over the bar as the Dragons continued to press forward. Muzz and Dave F were also very solid at the back as were Christian and Jason making timely interceptions.

On 30 minutes it was 2-0 Dragons Jacobo again from the edge of the penalty area this time. The Dragons were not having it all their own way and Kris was called into action again making two very good saves in quick succession.

The Dragons upped the pressure again and on 36 minutes Mark made it 3-0 with a chip in from just outside the 6 yard box. On 40 minutes it was 4-0 this time it was Anthony with a powerful shoot that raced in the back of the net. The Dragons were still not having it all their own way the half ended with a yet another great save from Kris.

Half Time 4-0 Dragons.

Start of the 2nd Half Muzz replaced Jason with Aris at right back.

Playing up hill in the 2nd half the Dragons started off finding themselves under a bit more pressure for the first 15 minutes of the 2nd half. Then Mark saw a chance just go wide after a good through ball and break away on 62 minutes. Then a controversial refereeing decision on 65 minutes when the ball had clearly gone out for a goal kick a corner was given and at the resulting corner the Panthers scored. 4-1 Dragons.

Muzz then decided on 65 minutes to change both Jacobo and John A to give the 2 remaining subs Simon and Daren some very valuable game time. In doing so he put Dave Fry in Midfield in replace of Jacobo and Daren went into the center back position and Simon taking over on left wing.

On 70 minutes Mark then made it 5-1 after some good work from Anthony Mark finished well.

With the 3 2nd half subs settling in well Aris, Daren, and Simon and with Muzz as solid as ever at the back the Dragons started to apply the pressure again. Then on 80 minutes from a pin point corner from Anthony Ed scored a absolutely cracking header. 6-1 Dragons.

There was still time for Sam to have a shoot cleared off the line after working tirelessly all game on the right wing.

Full Time 6-1 Dragons.

That only leaves the management to thank all the support we had on the day. Dave Keith for running the line even though he was injured in the first half and Jason doing a grand job in the 2nd half. A big thank you to Richie, Jordan, James. It was also great to see both Jerry and Graeme on the line encouraging the boys.

News

After a busy week both on and off the pitch, a much bigger email for you this week.

Firstly, this week saw the Dragons take to the pitch for not one but two friendlies against local sides. Whilst the results may have gone against us it has been fantastic to get everyone back together and playing again ahead of Sundays season opener against Bristol. For more details on the friendlies please see football news.

A couple of farewells now Sundays game marked the last match for the Dragons for Ray. Ray is leaving us for pastures new and we all wish him well and he will be missed. Also, leaving the club is Chris C. Again, we wish him every success for the future and will miss him. Also a big thank you as you have both bought so much to this club. However, we will see them again this year as Ray is joining up with the Exeter Lions and Chris has joined Leicester Wildecats. we are looking forward to beating both of you!!

On 29th August we will be holding a fundraising night at the Kings Cross. We will be holding a player auction and are looking for volunteers. If you are interested please speak to John B ( financefundraising@cardiffdragonsfc.co.uk ) We are also looking for volunteers for poster boys/girls for posters to display at the Kings Cross night and Mardi Gras. If anyone is interested please speak to Jordan ( Pressmarketing@cardiffdragonsfc.co.uk )

Speaking of Mardi Gras. This years event is on Sat 4th September. We have a stall booked for this. If anyone is interested in helping out and talking to the locals and generally talking about the club please get in touch with anyone on the committee.

Message from Dave Keith:

The Committee is pleased to announce that we are again taking orders from members for personal kit. For the first time we are able to offer a choice of home or away kit so if you already have the home kit, why not buy the away version to complete the set?? Some highly sought after shirt numbers are still available. Please check with Dave Keith that your preferred number is available before ordering as we don’t allow 2 shirts to have the same number.

Order forms are attached for both outfield and goalkeeper kits. Orders and payment must be submitted to Dave no later than Sunday 29 August. It won’t be possible to accept orders after that date. We expect to take delivery of the kit in early September.

Please note that the club makes no profit from these orders; all prices are charged at cost. The club also pays the delivery charge on members’ behalf.

Please direct any queries to Dave Keith at treasurer@cardiffdragonsfc.co.uk.

With Jason, John A and Muzz back from Cologne, Jason has kindly written a review of his experiences out there. Its great to hear what it was like out there and hopefully we can get a team out to next years event which is rumoured to take place in Rotterdam. Please see the attachment for Jason’s review.

Football News

Could this be the largest weekly e-mail ever. There is certainly loads going on at the moment.

This week’s big event is The Dragons first game of the season on Sunday in the GFSN Cup versus Bristol Panthers in Bristol. In the two previous meetings between the clubs Bristol won the first match 7-3 in Cardiff before The Dragons returned the compliment in Bristol running out 8-4 winners. It seems that we will be guaranteed a high scoring match and hopefully we can continue the winning away from home trend on Sunday.

Many thanks and best wishes to Ray Wilson who played his final match for us this Sunday. Ray is moving away from Cardiff and will be missed in defence and in the club as a whole. You will be pleased to know that this probably isn’t the last we see of Ray as he is intending on joining up with Exeter Lions.

We have put a proposed fixture list to the South West League teams and are awaiting their response at present. Hopefully, all being well we should be able to add another 4 fixtures to our calendar.

Keep an eye out over the next few weeks for changes to training. It is likely that with the posts going back up that we may go back to Blackweir Fields. The nights are also going to start to draw in so in a month or so we will be looking to train on a floodlit facility. We still also intend to start up a Dragons 5-a-side session, hopefully commencing on Tuesday nights after the half-marathon has passed.

The football management committee will be aiming to have a proper meeting in the next 2 weeks or so, so if anybody has any issues or suggestions they want to be raised at this meeting, please e-mail or speak to Murray (footballmanager@cardiffdragonsfc.co.uk), Anthony (Team Captain – secretary@cardiffdragonsfc.co.uk) or any of the other members of the football management team.

Recent Matches

Thursday 12th August 2010 – Friendly – Cardiff Dragons 0-7 CSKA Sophia – Pontcanna Fields

Against a very strong CSKA side and playing against the wind first half we went a goal down after 10 minutes but after that we settled down a bit and we tried force our way back into the game. After some excellent saves by Christian we went 2-0 down on 44 minutes.

Second half Muzz made a number of changes ensuring everybody got game time and we seemed to settle down a bit but it was not to be our night and further goals were added during the 2nd half resulting in a 7- 0 defeat. Every player gave there all and never gave up and that’s important are there were some good signs for the season ahead.

The Amos (Assistant Manager)

Sunday 15th August 2010 – Friendly – Cardiff Dragons 0-3 Heath Park Dave – Pontcanna Fields

First half we started off a bit nervous but soon got into our formation with our central midfield pair doing a lot of good work for us and winning some good ball. Our defence in the first half matched all that was thrown at us and there were some good solid keeping from Kris and mad a few good stops. Our front 2 were starting to work together as the half progressed and we made some good breaks giving there defence something to think about. Unfortunately we lost Stefan to an injury just before half time. It remained goalless at half time

Dave Heath Park really up the anti 2nd half and we were getting pushed further back and unable make the same progress as in the 1st half Kris having to make a few good saves. Then like the 1st half we picked up another injury Dave Keith having to go off this time. On the 15 minute point they scored there first goal which had been coming since the start of the half. They then added another goal 10 minutes later making 2-0. For the next 15 minutes the Dragons started to get back into the game creating a number of chances including a penalty shout turned down and hitting the post and an number of other chances created.

With 2 minutes remaining on the clock they got their 3rd goal.

The Amos (Assistant Manager)

Upcoming Matches

GFSN Cup – Sunday 22nd August 2010 – Bristol Panthers v Cardiff Dragons – Bristol – 2pm ko

The Dragons travel to Bristol for their first competitive match of the season in the GFSN Cup. The Dragons will be hoping to get the season off to a good start.

Please confirm your availability by texting Muzz or replying to this e-mail if you haven’t done so already. The availability process has been poor on this occasion (our fault) so we will be more organised for future matches but we need YOU to decide or find out your availability as soon as you can before an event so we can get things arranged. Match day subs will be £5.00.

6-a-side – Sunday 4th September 2010 – Leicester 6-a-side Tournament – Leicester

The Dragons will be competing in their second Leicester tournament after a good showing last year. Team 1 got knocked out in the quarter-finals by Village Manchester on penalties, while team 2 performed really well with an excellent team-spirit, but were unfortunately unable to qualify from a tough group.

This tournament is the day after Mardi Gras and as we have to confirm how many teams we are taking, we would ask members to consider this properly and decide on their availability as soon as they can so that we can guarantee places for everybody.

Please confirm your availability by filling out the attached availability form or texting Muzz if you haven’t done so already.

Well done to Crispin for topping the table after the first week with a very impressive 73 points. Jason however wasn’t quite so lucky at the bottom of the table with just 22 points. Still its a long season and I expect to see quite a lot of change over the next few months.

You can still join the league, go to fantasy.premierleague.com, enter a team (or use your old details) and enter the Cardiff Dragons league. The passcode is 311478-81139 but if you were in this league last year it should enter you automatically.

This year we have also set up a Championship Fantasy Football League, go to fantasy.football-league.co.uk, enter a team and then join the Cardiff Dragons FC league, pin is 834.

First of all I’d like to thank all the Dragons making the trip to Blackpool for the annual GFSN summer get together.

I hope I’m speaking for everybody and a good time was had by all I know I enjoyed the weekend but I always do when I go away with the Dragons.

GFSN – National Tournament – Saturday 12th June 2010

From a personal point of view it was great to be fully fit for a change and able to participate in the tournament. On a sad note my last as 5’s manager as I am stepping down from that position at the AGM but not hanging my gloves up just yet.

We have loads to be proud of as a club every player who put on a Dragon shirt gave 110% effort and I could not of asked for more than that.

Dragons Red – having been drawn in what I thought was a very tough group we did brilliantly to win the group with 16 points winning 5 games drawing 1 and losing just the 1 game. In the last 16 we played out 0-0 with Irish Shamrock losing 2-1 on penalties. In the group stage the Dragons Red wins included one over Titans who went on to win the tournament. A few special mentions from that team from me and I’m so proud to say that Chris Crimmins won player of the tournament well done Chris a much deserved award as I know how much hard work you put in over last 18 months and you have so much talent. The other special mention goes to Mark Biggs who was asked to audition for the Wayne Rooney Street Striker on SKY 1 a much deserved ask for Mark as he scored some excellent goals on the day and is an all round football talent. A final mention for our defence well done only letting in 1 goal on the day.

Dragons Yellow – what an all round team performance in the group stage drawing 6 of their 7 games 0-0 and losing 2-0 in the other finishing in 6th place out of 8. Some special mentions here again from me. I’d like to thank both Jordan Wall and Richie Jones who don’t play a lot of football but gave their all on the day and without them we would not have achieved what we did. Also a big thank you to both Christian Jones and John A for playing with injuries. Finally the old men of the team Amos in goal still as reliable as ever and Jason for his experience in guiding the team and his 100% commitment. Even though we did not qualify for the main competition we went into the vase winning our last 16 game 1-0 against Mersey John A scoring our goal. With John injured in the previous game it proved a difficult quarter final game with only 5 fit players left on a hot day, the Dragons Yellow going down 3-0 to Mersey’s other team.

Once again thank you for yet another fantastic Dragons weekend away.

Dave Amos

5’s manager
