Bristol Brunel Academy, Bristol Women’s Casual League (7-a-side)
5th December 2015
Another fine performance from the Drocks saw them take a well-deserved point from the league leaders and consolidate their own position as contenders.
In a match in which the Blues dominated possession and all the attacking statistics, they were arguably unlucky not to return with more than a draw, but some solid defending and an outstanding goalkeeping display from the opposition was to thwart them. The pattern was established early, Meg R and Hennie strong at the back, with Shona later coming on as sub to continue the disciplined defence, and Harriet controlling the game from midfield; with Ruth and Bethan pressing the defence and creating space for a KP on rampant form, it wasn’t long before the chances arrived, the latter being denied by the first of many fine stops following a corner, and again after a powerful shot from the right just before half time.
The Cellars—who had barely offered a glimpse of attacking threat—then stunned the Drocks and their supporters shortly after the break by stealing the lead. A hopeful punt forward held up just enough in the wind for an opposition striker to nip in between Shona and Alex and poach a goal.
Far from letting their heads drop, however, the Dragons soon recovered their purpose and doubled their attacking intensity. Laia added pace on the wing coming on as sub to push the attacking play. A string of corners, a brilliantly saved one-on-one for KP and a screamer from Harriet that fizzed narrowly wide failed to bring the leveller, but the due reward was to come eventually, and in memorable style. A pinpoint free kick delivery from Dragons Rock of the Day Harriet was redirected with equal precision by the head of KP to finally thwart the helpless keeper with less than ten minutes remaining, sending the all-singing fans into festive raptures.
There was still time to press for the winner, but although it was not to arrive the squad can be really proud of their most dominant display to date. Alex made a fantastic debut and provided solid goal kicks that made all the difference.
Congratulations to the players, to Ryan for supplying the Christmas songsheet, mince pies, mulled wine and… oh yes, management, and thanks to all the supporters who travelled across the bridge at such an ungodly hour.
Time for some Rockin’ around the Christmas tree before the next game and a very optimistic New Year for Dragons Rock.
