Cardiff Dragons 4 – 0 Llanishen Mustangs

Match report

25th October 2015, Pontcanna, Men’s Sunday Lazarou League

A record league win and the first clean sheet of the season for a rampant Dragons.

In an open game, the Dragons saw off several corner-kick threats before making their superior creativity and greater range of attacking options tell, Liam coolly converting two opportunities before the half-hour. Further chances followed, and with strength, pace and quality all over the pitch the home team effectively had the match won by the break—though it took a defensive mix-up to finally bring a deserved third goal.

Manager Anthony responded by withdrawing a few players carrying minor injuries and making the appropriate tactical tweaks. A comfortable second period ensued, illuminated by a passing move as crisp as the autumn day, freeing Dan to crown the win with a decisive finish after sixty minutes. Inevitably Dragon of the match Liam was involved, supplying the crucial assist.

Congratulations to the squad on one of the most complete performances in the club’s history, giving the impression the Dragons are developing into a fearsome attacking force. Thanks also to Anthony, to Amos for running the line, and to all our very appreciative, much appreciated supporters.

Cardiff Dragons 3 – 1 Cardiff Eagles

Match report

18 October 2015, Men’s Sunday Lazarou League, Llanishen Park

Three long-range missiles from Liam, three more points, and three wins in a row as the Dragons soared above the Eagles into the top half of the table.

Once again the victory was achieved after falling behind, but a pair of free kick opportunities wonderfully dispatched by Liam turned the game on its head within ten minutes. Having got their noses in front, the Dragons were able to settle into counter-attacking mode, displaying the steely composure in defence and midfield which has characterised this winning streak. Comfortably dealing with the rare threats on goal and unleashing the menacing pace and trickery of Dan and Liam—complemented by outstanding performances from Fudge and Mehdi on the flanks—whenever the chance arose, the Blues made the result safe when Liam curled an audacious attempt from wide on the left over the Eagles’ keeper just before the end of normal time.

A fine individual and team performance which even drew some praise from the manager! Dragon of the Match was shared between the hat-trick hero and Chris G, with special mentions for Fudge and Ryan M, and for Joe, who was unlucky to see his league debut curtailed by injury. Anthony deserves great credit also for his shrewd tactical decisions, and many thanks to those who came to support. The Dragons would also like to thank the Cardiff Eagles for providing a very competent and unbiased referee in the absence of a qualified match official.

Cardiff Dragons 2 – 1 Cardiff Saints

Match report

Heath Park (Away)

Men’s Sunday Lazarou League, 11th October 2015

The Week of the Dragon finished as it began with an exciting victory in the Sunday League.

The Saints began well, consistently running behind the Dragons defence and supplying dangerous crosses, and after surviving a few glaring opportunities at the other end, the home team were rewarded when taking the lead with a looping header after 25 minutes.

This was the cue for the Dragons to shift up a gear, with Liam, Zak and Mehdi causing panic with their running and passing, and the pressure paid off when Emyr was pulled down following a corner, Muzz making no mistake from the spot. The captain wasn’t long in getting his own name on the scoresheet, completing a remarkable turnaround before the break.

A cool, controlled second half display against increasingly unsettled opponents—who incurred a seemingly inevitable red card when Andy was hacked down with a quarter of the game left—made sure of the victory, a fourth within a fantastic 8-day spell for teams playing under the club’s banner.

Well done to the entire squad—especially Dragon of the match Chris G for his awesome display, to Anthony for managing, and to our massed ranks of human and canine supporters.

Dragons Rock 1 – 0 Friesian Reds

Match report

Brunel Academy, Bristol

Bristol Women’s Casual League, 7-a-side, 10th October 2015

What a result for the Dragons Rock crew in only their second league start!

A performance of great skill, discipline and defensive resilience appeared to be the recipe for a deserved draw, the clean sheet being the icing on the cake: then came the cherry, KP’s late winner from an assist by Harriet from a corner igniting ecstatic scenes between the scorer, her team-mates, the manager, and the all-singing horde of supporters.

It was just reward for a squad whose attitude was impossible to fault. Megan R’s goalkeeping heroics earned her the player’s vote for Dragon of the Day, but in truth the award could justifiably have been split between the ten players. The effort, commitment and technical improvement between the last game and this were outstanding, and with three points in the bag, let’s hope the team can grow in confidence and continue to progress.

Well done Ryan for making the tricky decisions on the sidelines, the supporters who travelled, cheered and sang throughout, but above all to the proud winners, the Dragons Rock’s.

Cardiff Dragons 15 – 3 Bridgend Guards

Match Report

HM Parc Prison, Bridgend

Friendly, 5-a-side, 6th October 2015

A trip to Bridgend prison for a women’s friendly in the lead up to the league match on Saturday proved a great chance to practice those shooting skills. The first 15 minutes had the makings of a close and tense match with the score at 2-2.

But it wasn’t long before the team found their rhythm, keeping their positions, to make it 9-2 at 30 minutes gone.

The first time these 6 have played together, they marked well, defended solidly and all fell into place. A real confidence booster!

Shona’s debut performance in defence earned her Dragon of the match. Thanks to coach Ryan, and supporters for making the trip to Bridgend.
