Men’s Sunday Lazarou League, Pontcanna Fields

A brave display from a depleted Dragons squad, ten men taking the field against the league’s hot team and, after gaining their bearings, playing the entire second half without conceding a goal. In fact, we won the last 46 minutes 1-0!

Muzz’s penalty—after a clatter on Fudge while fighting for a high ball—was the “winner”, but the relentless defending and positional discipline were the outstanding features on a difficult day for flamboyance.

Well done Anthony for the half-time speech, Neil for getting well and truly stuck in on his 11-a-side debut, Dave W for ably filling Ryan B’s monstrous boots in goal, Amos for running the line, and the many supporters and walking wounded for cheering us on against the odds.

Trelai Park, Men’s Sunday Lazarou League

13th September 2015

A second successive late heartbreaker for the Dragons, who again looked in control after goals by Mehdi and Emyr had twice put them in front, only for a marginal onside decision from a free kick and a late counter-attacking winner to deny the team at least a deserved point.

Injuries and absences having already stretched the squad to its limits, the enforced withdrawal of talismanic defender Muzz midway through the second half was a major blow against very physical opponents, but the Dragons appeared to be weathering the storm bravely until the unfortunate late concessions, even pressing for a late equaliser only for Liam to be denied by an excellent point-blank save.

If the team continue to show this level of performance, however, there is no doubt the results will soon follow. Keep the faith, boys!

Another good job by Anthony on the touchline, and thanks to all our supporters on the day.

Dragons Rock 1 – 7 Shorthorns

Match Report

Brunel Academy, Bristol

Bristol Women’s Casual League, 7-a-side

12th September 2015

Dragons Women and Rock Solid have formed Dragons Rock this season to make an historic day for the Dragons, as our first all-female team to compete in regular competition ventured into the Bristol Women’s League. And don’t let the scoreline deceive you—this was a fantastic effort with no replacements available against a large and talented Bristolian squad.

Indeed, a number of the Shorthorns goals came on the break as Dragons Rock pressed, dominating possession for a long period of the second half, some fine goalkeeping and sheer bad luck denying KP on several occasions.

The tireless, never-say-die attitude, the team spirit, some lovely passages of passing and pieces of skill, Ruth’s goal-poaching, the performance of Eliza between the posts and Laia who played through a painful injury to earn the Dragon of the Day accolade—all these were memorable aspects that will have filled the substantial and (sometimes painfully) vocal group of Dragons supporters with pride and hope for the season ahead.

Well done to everyone involved, including manager Ryan, as Dragons Rock look forward to rocking Bristol in the weeks and months to come.

Dragons in Leicester – 6-a-side Tournament 2015

Leicester Tournament6-a-side mixed gender

6th September 2015

Kicking off the GFSN season, the Dragons’ annual raid on the Midlands’ premier LGBT tournament provided the usual mixture of highs and lows, with two convincing wins sandwiching a trio of defeats, and a late comeback by one of our group rivals denying us a place in the knockout stages.

Although, on a warm afternoon, the team were unable to emulate recent successes (the narrow final defeat last year, and of course the unforgettable victory of 2013) there were many outstanding performances throughout the team, with tournament debutantes Megan R in defence and Dave W in goal (with a display worthy of his illustrious namesake Mr Amos) deserving of special mentions. The Dragons saved their best till last, with some strong defending, sharp passing and a Fudge hat-trick producing a 3-0 defeat of GFSN rivals Mersey Marauders.

Alas, this proved insufficient to see us progress, but the spirit, camaraderie and good humour that makes Cardiff Dragons such a special club shone through the day, aided in no small part by the motivational skills, tactical nous and nifty man-management of Anthony and the very welcome support of Amos and Shona.

We’ll be back!!!

Cardiff Dragons: Anthony, Darrin, Dave W, Fudge, Harriet, Jason, John A, Megan R, Muzz.
