Dragons warming up
Before I go into the match report I’d like thank the support on the sideline today; it was fantastic and worth at least one goal. Many thanks to our wonderful Chairperson Ali, Amy, Jerry, Iestyn, Darren, Luke, Christian, Richie, Ruth and Alex. Thank you to John W for running the line and to Jay for all his hard work in making sure everything ran smoothly. Well done to Muzz for making sure we were very well prepared for the game and his tactical and positional placings today, it was spot on. Thanks also to Lawrence for all his work on the sideline today, and to Amy. Well done the Football Management Team.
Well done to Craig who was making his competitive debut for the Dragons.
The Dragons were off to a flyer today and you could tell they were all charged up for this very important fixture. After 90 seconds the Dragons won a corner and a great ball into the box by Ant was met by the head of Chris G with an unstoppable header into the top corner of the net 1-0 Dragons. On 7 minutes though, the scores were level from what looked like a cross which was caught by the wind and flew into the top corner of the Dragons net giving Ryan no chance 1-1.
The game settled down and in all honesty it was turning into a game where there was lots of great work down both wings and through the middle, but neither goal keeper was being really tested for the majority of the first half. Ryan B was at his very best today, commanding his box and was able to deal with all that he needed to. Our back four were marshalled excellently as ever by Chris G who was at the centre of defence and his central defensive partner, Nicky, looked very solid in everything he was doing. Ryan Mc at right back and John A at left back were very comfortable with their defensive duties as well as linking up with the midfield.
In the centre of midfield, Manager Muzz was playing a holding position in front of the back four and this was complimented by Emyr with his passing ability and also being available to make runs to help the wingers and front two. Ant on the right wing and Medhi on the left wing were having excellent games, both linking up with the front two and helping out the defence.
Up front today, Craig was really strong with holding up the ball which worked well with Liam who was such a live wire; Newcastle could not cope with his pace and touches.
There was lots of pressure applied in the first half by the Dragons but we couldn’t add to the early goal. Whenever there was a danger to the Dragons back line, Ryan B was commanding in goal, being able to take every cross in the box, catching them all and taking any pressure off the defence in what was a very important role today.
On 40 minutes Ryan Mc had to go off with an injury – Lawrence took his place and showed he was as solid as ever.
Half Time 1-1.
The Dragons started the 2nd half as they did much of the first half controlling the play with everyone working well and knowing what their jobs were; it was turning into an all-round team performance. On 50 minutes Ryan Mc came back on and Lawrence came off. On 55 minutes Eddie replaced Muzz and he slotted into his position, giving the Dragons a fresh pair of legs in the midfield and he was able to offer an alternative route for the Dragons.
On 65 minutes, after knocking at the door of the Panthers’ defence all 2nd half the Dragons got the breakthrough with good work through the midfield which found Liam in the box who turned and played a delightful chip shot over the goalkeeper into the back of the net 2-1. On 72 minutes Craig was replaced by Mike W who as ever was his very energetic self for the remainder of the game.
On 75 minutes the Dragons scored the goal of the game – a pin-point pass from Ant found Liam on one of his many runs into the Panthers box. Liam let a shot go from 18 yards that beat the goalkeeper at his near post. It was a wonderful goal and worthy of winning any game.
On 80 minutes Muzz came back on for the injured Nicky and on 85 minutes Jay came on for Medhi and as always with Jay, he was very committed to all he did which was just what the Dragons needed at this point.
