Cardiff Dragons 1 (Anthony 47 mins) Wolverhampton Warriors 0
Sunday 19th January 2014 – The Dragons go top in the GFSN League after an all round great team performance.
Match report by Dave Amos
The game was played on a very difficult pitch with the ball not easy to control on the old type of astro turf surface after having to move venues following the pitches being called off at Llanrumney. Goalkeeper Ryan B was outstanding today with everything he did. From the defence and central pairing of Muzz And Captain Chris G full backs Ryan M, Adam in the first half and Jason in the second half, they were all totally solid as a rock.
As too was the Midfield central pairing of Matt and Emyr who won so much ball today, and on the wings John A and Andy worked so hard. Upfront both Anthony, our goal scorer, and Chris O got through so much work for us.
A get better soon wish from the Dragons goes to Liam; hopefully he will be over his injury soon. Many thanks to Aris for lining in the 2nd half and also to Jason and Sam for doing it in 1st half.
Many thanks to Ali and Amy for their support today and breaking into Muzz’s house to get the nets hehe. Also to Lawrence who was helping Muzz out on the line.
The Dragons lined up as follows today:
Ryan B, Adam, Ryan M, Muzz ( Manager), Chris G (Cat), Matt, Emir, John A, Andy, Anthony, Chris O.
Subs: Sam, Aris, Jason, Lawrence.
To the game itself:
In the first 20 minutes both sides struggled with the surface and it’s fair to say both sides were being very cautious and trying to weigh each other up. On 20 minutes Ryan B pulled off 2 important stops. On 25 minutes it was Emyr’s turn at the other end with a shot from long range which the Wolves goalkeeper saved. The Warriors were pressing in the first half but the Dragons dealt with everything they offered comfortably. On 35 minutes a great pass by John A found Andy – his shot just went over the bar but it was a great effort. There was still time on 40 minutes for Ryan B to pull off a good save.
Half time 0-0
In the second half Jason replaced Adam and the Dragons upped the tempo. On 47 minutes the Dragons were right on their game. In a great move, Anthony made space for himself, lost his defender and shot from 18 yards, beating the goalkeeper with a great goal. 1-0 The dragons.
In the next 15 minutes the Dragons had the better possession and were controlling the game. Having said that, after conceding a few free kicks it was one to many for the referee as Emyr picked up a booking for a challenge. On 70 minutes Sam replaced Andy. There was a lot of midfield play over the next 20 minutes with both sides cancelling each other out. Matt had a good shot that just went wide on 90 mins after winning 2 corners.
Full time 1-0 to the Dragons.
It was a well deserved win and it’s a great reward for the first 5 months of the season to go top of the league. Thank you to Gary who refereed the game well and thank you to Wolverhampton who played their part in the game.
Man of the Match – Ryan our Goalkeeper
