Funding Forum – The Sequel!

The first Funding Forum was a great success and a number of great ideas were discussed in relation to how we can raise funding for the club this year.

Now we’d like to pick up on three or four of these ideas and discuss them in more detail so we can get them into the calendar and start making plans. All members are welcome to come along so if you have a bit of free time it would be great to see you there so that we can get even more input into some great fundraising ideas.

Wolverhampton Harts 1 – 0 Cardiff Dragons (GFSN League)

The Dragons go down fighting in a very close encounter – match report by Dave Amos:

Wolverhampton Harts 1 Cardiff Dragons 0

Starting Line up:
Ryan, John A, Christian, Muzz [Manager], Chris G [Captain], Matt, Chris C, Mike W, Liam, Chris O.
Subs: Kris, Andy, James, Jay, Adam.

Never in 5 years have we had so much possession and chances and not got anything from a game. That’s how close  we came today. If you’re going lose a game, and we never want lose, that was the way to lose if that makes sense. There were competitive debuts for Ryan, Chris O, Matt, and Adam – congratulations to all of them.

Wolverhampton started the brighter side with 3 corners in the first 15 minutes. The Dragons really got into the game after that with Chris O having a couple of shots that went just wide. There was also some good link up play with Matt and Liam, and the midfield worked hard with some excellent passing link up play along the floor. However, on 21 minutes and against the run of play, we went a goal down. The ball was played over the defence and we were a little slow to react; the shot was struck well from 8 yards giving Ryan no chance in goal.

The goal did not affect the way the Dragons were playing – they continued to create chance after chance. On 28 minutes the Dragons conceded a free kick just out side the area. Ryan excelled by making a great save to keep the score at 1-0. Anthony also came to the Dragons rescue by kicking the ball off the line on 29 minutes but the defence was being well marshalled by Muzz and Chris G. The remaining 16 minutes of the first half was all Dragons with Andy coming on for Mike W on 30 minutes. There was good work by Liam in that period who was causing all sorts of problems with his pace and ability. Both Matt and Chris O had chances in that period.

Half time 1-0 to Wolverhampton.

The Dragons started slowly in the 2nd half and were not so fluent, but Liam forced a save from the keeper on 50 minutes and there was also a shoot from Anthony that was just over. On 55 minutes Muzz picked up a nose injury that forced him off so Mike W replaced him. On 60 minutes Chris C came off after working very well down the left wing all match and was replaced by Adam. On 65 minutes Muzz came back on and Christian came off after having an excellent game at left back and centre back after Muzz came off. The next 25 minutes was all the Dragons. We were creating so many chances but we just lacked that killer finish today. I knew it was not going to be our day when on 85 minutes Matt hit the post \ cross bar with a scorching shot that beat the goalkeeper all ends up. In the last 5 minutes the Dragons had 4 corners and a free kick but were unable to unlock the Wolverhampton defence. In that period Chris C replaced John A and James replaced Matt who got a bad cramp injury.

Final score Wolverhampton Harts 1 Cardiff Dragons 0

Triumphant Dragons bring home the trophy! by Jason Cousins

It’s hard to know where to start on what turned out to be a most fantastic day for Cardiff Dragons FC. To win our first major national trophy remaining undefeated throughout the tournament is a massive achievement for the club and a reward for the efforts everyone involved with the Dragons have put in over the last 5 or so years. This was epitomised over the weekend with the efforts of those who both worked so hard at the Madri Gras and those who travelled to Leicester. The smiles and joy I witnessed as we wo

n the final will never be forgotten none more so than the wide grin on Mr Amos.

The day began as many of our away trips do with an early start as the 2 Dragons cars and Muzz’s van headed up to meet Jason in Leicester who had a leisurely lie in. It was a hectic start to the competition as we were first on and had to prepare quickly, but a solid first game saw us defeat Birmingham 1-0. Amos and Darrin prepared us well throughout the day with some excellent pep talks and management and our second game ended in a 1-1 draw with Leicester Rainbows, a creditable result against arguably one of the trickiest teams we faced. Liam scored both the goals in our opening two games. In our third game Chris G found his scoring boots scoring twice with Liam adding the other as we defeated Fosse Legends 3-1; one of our goals was a real team effort with everyone playing a part in the goal. We even scored the oppositions goal following a fine finish by Anthony past Amos (Christian with the assist)! By now we were firing on all cylinders and working really effectively as a unit with everyone playing solidly in their respective positions. Our last three games in the group saw us score 11 goals without reply as we convincingly beat Brighton 4-0, Nottingham 3-0 and Yorkshire 4-0. The performance against Yorkshire was especially pleasing as they were undefeated up to that point. With 16 goals for and just 2 conceded we deservedly topped our group with 16 points. The fluency and r

ange of our passing from back to front was excellent at times and Amos and the rest of the defence were solid in the main throughout.

We had an hour gap before our quarter final which allowed us to relax a little in the sunshine conversing with some of the other teams before making sure we were prepared for the game. We faced another Leicester team (Helsinki) in the quarters and soon took control racing into a 3-0 lead. A slight wobble allowed Leicester briefly back into it but a fourth goal ensured we won comfortably with the final score 4-2. Liam and Chris G were our goalscorers. I must mention Ruth at this point who was as usual in fantastic voice supporting the team, we were worried at one point that her voice was going but it was just a minor blip in proceedings.

Onto the semi final and a nerve racking encounter against one of two very strong Nottingham teams the second of which we were to face in the final. We started the game well going 1-0 up with a fine strike by Liam. As the game went on we tired a little and Nottingham equalised halfway through the game. In a tense finish both sides could have snatched victory but a draw was a fair result as the game went to penalties. Muzz, Ant and Liam stepped up and kept their cool to all score and send us through. We even had the drama of a twice taken Muzz penalty and a fine Amos save.

And so to the final. It was hard to say if it was more nerve racking to play or watch by this time. The game started very evenly and was still 0-0 by the halfway point. The first goal was to prove vital and we never looked back from then on. Chris G scored our opener and Anthony added a second with both goals excellently finished. The final whistle prompted a mass of wild celebrations from the Dragons players. Once the dust had settled the news of our victory was communicated and we headed to the pub to col
Finally I must say thank you on behalf of the Dragons to Leicester Wildecats for once again organising and running the tournament. It was played in excellent spirit as usual.lect the trophy and start the photoshoots! We then celebrated with a drink or two prior to heading home in convoy stopping off for a healthy post match KFC.
