Cardiff Dragons 1 – 0 Exeter Lions

CARDIFF DRAGONS 1 EXETER LIONS 0

Goals: Muzz 19 mins

The Dragons won a hard fought game that could of gone either way at the end. The Dragons solid performance was very satisfying after the heavy defeat we suffered down in Exeter only 2 months ago. There were also head injuries to both Muzz and John A both ending up in casualty John A leaving the pitch just before half time and Muzz attending casualty after the game.

The Dragons lined up as follows:-

Crispin, Muzz (Manager), Anthony (Capt), Ryan, John A, John B, Dave F, Edwin, Stefan, Hywel, Simon E.

Subs: Jason, Darrin, Daren, Paul.

The first ten minutes saw both sides try and settle into their stride in midfield. The Dragons then started to link up well through midfield and down the wings with some good link up play between Ed, Hywel and Anthony. Simon also was making good use of his pace with some excellent running off the ball. The Dragons then forced 3 corners and from the 3rd pin point corner from Anthony, Muzz scored with a forceful header into the top corner of the net after 19 minutes 1-0 Dragons.

The Dragons were starting to put there stamp on the game with good interlink play. In the next 15 minutes Stefan, Hywel, and Dave F all came close to increasing the score line. There were solid displays from Ryan at Right back on his debut for the Dragons John A at left back and the central defensive pairing of Muzz and John B were very comfortable and looked very solid. Then on 38 minutes the Dragons were to suffer a double injury after a collision of heads between Muzz and John A. Both leaving the field being replaced by Jason and Paul. Muzz did return just before half time with Paul coming off. The half ended with a shot from Muzz that just went over the cross bar. Half time 1-0 Dragons.

The 2nd half got underway and it seemed that the Dragons were affected by the injuries we had suffered and Exeter did start to force there way back into the game. After 55 minutes Muzz had to go off for more treatment on his head injury, Paul replacing him and Dave F moving back in central defence. It was in this period with Muzz was off pitch that Exeter had a goal disallowed for a foul on Crispin who was very solid all game. He made two excellent saves within 10 minutes to keep the Dragons in the game and his handling was excellent all game. On 65 minutes Muzz returned to the pitch in place of Simon. The game became very open after this and either side could of gone on to score more goals. With the manager Muzz leading by example being as solid as a rock at the back and with the support of all the team the Dragons held solid. On 80 minutes Darrin replaced Stefan. The game finished 1-0 to the Dragons.

The management would like to thank Exeter Lions a very entertaining game and their supporters for making the trip to Cardiff.

We would also like to thank Jason in the first half and Kris in the second half for running the line for us. All our support on the day Ali and Amy and a big thank you to the both of you taking John A to the hospital. Richie, Dave K, Christian, and Jordan for recording the game for us.

The Amos (Assistant Manager)

Dragons Weekly Bulletin – 17th November 2010

Football News

Sunday Cardiff Blues 8-3 Cardiff Reds

With the Bristol Tournament scheduled for this weekend cancelled we felt that an in house match would be a good idea as a substitute. We didn’t quite get the 11v11 we had wanted and at times we had to play 10 v 9 for various reasons. Ed captained and managed the Blues, while Anthony captained and managed the Reds. Despite an incident packed match, most people enjoyed the game thoroughly, and some of the football produced on the day was very good. Chris Crimmins made a return to the Dragons for the weekend as he, Jeremy and Sylvain were down from Leicester Wildecats and he seemed to perform like he’d never been away. Ed’s Blues took the game on the day, winning 8-3. Many thanks to Amy, Ali and Crispin for coming out to support us.

IGLFA Euro Cup – Manchester – June 9-12 2011

Some members may have received a text this week about a tournament in Manchester next year, in which Cardiff Dragons have been invited to compete. Here are a few more details for you.

Who are the IGLFA? – International Gay and Lesbian Football Association, they hold a World Club Championship every 4 years and a European Club Championship every 2 years. They are linked with organisations such as GFSN and Gay Games. The last major tournament they solely hosted was the World Club Championship at Washington DC in 2009.

What Tournament is This? – This is the European Club championship in which clubs such as ours are invited to take part. As we have not been to a IGLFA tournament before, we have only been invited to their 6-a-side tournament at present, though they will consider us for 11-a-side tournament if the opportunity arises. By Cardiff Dragons taking part in the 6-a-side tournament, as well as being a major stepping stone in the clubs development, we will become eligible for 11-a-side tournaments in the future.

Benefits of Competing in 6-a-side tournament – Although it is disappointing that we can only enter the 6-a-side tournament at present, and can not yet take on Europe as a club, especially as it is in our own backyard and makes a lot of factors such as travel far less complicated than going abroad, there are some good points to the 6-a-side tournament. Firstly, at present there are only 6 entrants, so the opportunity for silverware is better than in the larger tournament. Secondly, although Trowbridge will be one of the opponents, we will get to play and meet new teams from Prague, Stockholm and other cities from around Europe.

Are we going? – We would hope that we would be able to send a team up, the response from texts this week was excellent. We haven’t yet entered as we are clearing up what costs the club and you may have to pay, but it is looking promising

What costs are known at present? – At present the package put together by the IGLFA accommodates 10 persons to be registered for the tournament and to stay in a hotel with the rest of the other clubs. For 3 nights, each person attending will need to pay £125 with a £25 deposit to be taken shortly. There is the cheaper option of a hostel for which the cost for the above works out at £60 for each person. We have a slight concern that there may be a personal registration cost for this tournament, in previous tournaments each individual has had to pay around £100 for this, so we will be seeking confirmation before we commit to the event. Both accommodation prices are very good, and if we are going it would be advised for us to take up the offer.

So, what do you think about this? – You can e-mail Murray on footballmanager@cardiffdragonsfc.co.uk

Training

This Thursday training we will again be at Gol Centres at 9pm on astroturf. Please could everybody try to get there around 8:30 so we can be ready and warmed up when the court becomes free. You will need astroboots or moulds as no studs can be warn on the pitch. Numbers have been excellent at recent sessions and we have unfortunately had great difficulty in getting an 11-a-side facility.

Committee News

GFSN News

The GFSN National League is proud to be an inclusive, diverse football league where players of any sex, sexuality, creed or race are free to play sport.

Over the last 9 years the league recognises and continues to encourage the valuable and enriching contribution made by all players to the league’s growth and reputation.

Recently we have seen the Kick It Out “Week of Action” campaign . Kick It Out works throughout the football, educational and community sectors to challenge discrimination – supported and funded by the game’s governing bodies, including founding body The PFA, Premier League and The FA.

The GFSN League fully supports their campaign.

The GFSN League will not tolerate racism, homophobia, sexism or discrimination of any kind. Should any instance of discrimination be proven against a player or a member club, the league will enforce the harshest sanctions possible.

After a recent complaint regarding alleged racist behaviour in a GFSN fixture earlier this season the league committee would like to remind all clubs of their responsibility to uphold the values and ethos of the league and deal with all such incidents when they occur. We believe that member clubs should identify and deal with any instances of discrimination locally. From the 2011/2012 season, it is our recommendation that all member clubs will need to provide the league with their equality and diversity statement demonstrating they do not tolerate any form of discrimination together with evidence of how they intend to enforce this.

To see Cardiff Dragons policies on discrimination and all other policies please visit the Club Policy & Document page.

Fundraising

Easyfundraising has a sister site called Easysearch. This works in a similar way to Easyfundraising whereby our supporters use it (as a search engine this time) and we get 50% of advertising revenues paid to the site as a result.Cardiff Dragons now has a page through this. You don’t have to buy anything for us to make money; the site earns advertising revenue when someone clicks a link they find and it goes to a supplier’s page. It really is money for nothing!!

Instead of your usual search engine, use the below link. You will be earning money for the Dragons at no cost to yourself. Our page is at: http://cdfc.easysearch.org.uk

Social

This Saturday there is a GFSN social. We will be going to watch Cardiff City vs Nottingham Forest then going out for a meal followed by drinks in the night. GFSN members from around the country will be attending as well as some of the Exeter guys who we play on the Sunday. It would be great to get as many of us out to show them what Cardiff is all about. Look out for an email later in the week with more information.

Bristol 5-a-side Tournament – CANCELLED

The Bristol 5-a-side Tournament has unfortunately been cancelled due to a low number of teams committing to the event. This is obviously a shame as we were hoping to use this tournament to get people football, sending a few teams over to enjoy the opportunity of competing against teams from the South-West, if not to bring back some silverware. It is in my opinion the main South-West 5-a-side tournament and they are hoping to re-schedule for early 2011.

We need to start arranging things for this event. It is a good tournament with a fun party afterwards. We can go as Dragons teams or you can chose to be in a mixed team with players from around the country. We need to sort accommodation and team entry so we would be grateful if everybody could let us know what they are doing. Usual channels are fine.

Upcoming Matches

Sunday 21st November 2010 – GFSN Cup – Cardiff Dragons vs Exeter Lions – 2pm ko – Pontcanna Fields

Our second fixture of the season against Exeter sees the Lions come to Cardiff for the first time. We played recently in a development game and lost 0-7. We will be looking to put in a good showing against a strong emerging side in the GFSN structure. This will be a cup match and technically we are still in the tournament. We may be tempted to alter the make up of the squad which plays, and will make a decision shortly. The considerations will be whether we go into the match all guns blazing, whether we use this fixture to develop players or to mix and match who plays. The week after will be a league match against London Leftfooters, so it could be an ideal warm-up match for this. What would you like to do with this fixture??

Either way we need to know who is available, and we want to have as many people as possible, so please could you e-mail Murray footballmanager@cardiffdragonsfc.co.uk with your availability for this fixture.

Chairman’s Message & Secretary Role

Hi everyone,

It is with a heavy heart that I have this week received Ant’s resignation from the role of Secretary. Ant has been, for the years since first joining, a rock for this club. He has supported us in all aspects of club operations, from the pitch to the office, and his contribution to the way the club is run, to the way we play, to the successes on and off the pitch, cannot be dulled. He deserves all of our gratitude for the work he has put into helping to make the club a success, especially through some very testing times, and I hope that he will continue to do so in the future.

This does, however, open up a position on the Committee that will need to be filled as soon as possible. Attached are the forms, containing job description and application, you will need to complete and send to me if you would like to be considered for the position. Applicants will be invited to the next Committee meeting, and a member will be co-opted into that position during the meeting. The role of secretary is a tough but reward one, which will see the member managing much of the day-to-day operation of the club, including co-ordinating two other committee members, taking minutes at meetings, and other duties.

I hope to hear from you soon.

A Christmas message

Hello all. I know it’s a bit early to be giving a chrimbo message, but to steal a line, “money never sleeps”.

I need to ask of you all again. (Just think of me as an anti-Santa who asks for things instead of giving.)

Therefore can I please remind everyone about www.easyfundraising.org.uk. I know how generous the Dragons are and I’m sure you’ll be buying lots of gifts online for your friends and families this year.

Easy fundraising has links to all the popular retailers. For example, Amazon, Argos, Tesco, B&Q, and many more.

If you are buying online the chances are there is a link on easy fundraising. All you need to do is follow these steps to raise money for the club, at no extra cost from you.

  • Go to www.easyfundraising.org.uk and sign in/create profile.
  • If you’re a first timer please remember to choose Cardiff Dragons as your chosen good cause.
  • Click on the retailer you wish to buy from.
  • Buy as normal.

If done correctly a small percentage of the retailers profit will be given to the Dragons for free (usually about 2.5%).

To steal another line, “Ask not what your club can do for you, ask what you can do for your club”.

Happy Spending

Finance & Fundraising Officer

The arrangements are as follows:

  • Meet at 7pm for a drinks reception (upstairs, where we held our AGM)
  • Buffet served 7:30pm (upstairs in our private area)

The cost for the buffet is £7.50. We will be giving a £2.50 subsidy per member, hence £5 for members and £7.50 for non-members. (cut off date for new members is 27 November) Full payment is required to be made to Dave Keith by 5 December. Cash, cheques or electronic transfer accepted.

Also, don’t forget to reply to Richie if you are interested in the Secret Santa.
