Cardiff Dragons 2 – 0 Birmingham Blaze

Goals: Muzz 5mins, Mark 85mins

The Dragons were flying high on Halloween after this well deserved victory. After 3 failed attempts against the Blaze it was fantastic to have the upper hand. And this results kick starts our league campaign after the disappointing 1-0 defeat against Brighton last month.

The Dragons lined up as follows:-

Kris, Muzz (Manager), Anthony (Capt), Jason, Christian, Dave F, Edwin, Stefan, Hywel, Crispin, Simon E.

Subs: John A, Mark, Daren, Lucas, Dave K

The Dragons started off strongly forcing the pace from the start. And it was after only 5 minutes that the Dragons struck after a pin point corner by Crispin manager Muzz got on the end of it to power the ball into the net with his head 1-0 Dragons.

Then Stefan hit the Blaze cross bar after good work down the left side. After forcing more corners that were expertly taken by both Crispin and Anthony the first 20 minutes was all about the Dragons pressure but without too much more goal success.

As the game progressed the Blaze became frustrated with some of the refereeing decisions and after 25 minutes 2 of their players names had gone into the referees notebook. The blaze then had an opportunity to hit back on 30 minutes after Kris under pressure picked up a back pass. But Kris made a fantastic save from the resulting free kick. The Blaze went on to hit the post soon after and the Dragons rode there luck for a change.

After another Blaze yellow card Edwin made a good run and had his shot saved. The same fate was to befall Crispin with a shoot just over the bar. Simon E was also doing some great work up front for the Dragons.

On 42 minutes the Dragons picked up their only booking of the game Christian having his name taken for an attempted handball. There was also some solid work by Anthony in midfield and getting some great dead balls into the box and Hywel as ever was working his socks off down the right side. The same can be said for both Muzz and Dave F at the center of defence and Christian and Jason at full backs Kris was as solid as ever in goal commanding his area today it was an all around team effort and at half time it was 1-0 Dragons.

2nd half Muzz made 1 change at the starting line up replacing Simon E with Mark up front. The Blaze start off the 2nd have a longer stronger than the first half and forced 3 corners in the first 10 minutes but the Dragons defence held strong. On 55 minutes Christian picked up a slight knock at the same time Muzz replaced Jason with John A at left back.

The Dragons were starting to get back into the game on 60 minutes and there was more good work from midfield and Mark was starting to cause problems for the Blaze defence with his pace upfront.

On 65 minutes Crispin went off injured and was replaced by Lucus. The Dragons then had more injury problems Christian who was as solid as ever had to go with what looked a bad knee twist and was replaced by Jason.

On 75 minutes Kris made another good save to prevent an equaliser for the Blaze. The Dragons never gave up though on the day and were rewarded in the 84 minute with there 2nd goal after a through ball to Mark he used his pace and strength to force the ball home after a good run. Muzz made the final change of the day giving Daren a run out replacing Stefan. The final score Dragons 2 Blaze 0.

The management would like to thank Birmingham Blaze after a very entertaining game and their supporters for helping Christian with his injury thank you for that.

We would also like to thank David K for once again running the line for us. All our support on the day Ali and Amy in the Grand Stand!!!!! Adam, Richie, Jordan, Darren, Roger, Adrian and Matt L for taking pictures of the game.

Titans 11-a-side Tournament

Dragons Team: Anthony (Captain), Murray, Christian, Crispin, John A, Simon E, David K, Conor, Simon A, Leanne, Simon D, Lewi, Richie, Jordan

  • Cardiff Dragons 0 – 1 Fitlads Falcons
  • Trowbridge Tigers 4 – 0 Cardiff Dragons
  • Cardiff Dragons 1 – 0 Leftfooters
  • Stonewall 1 – 0 Cardiff Dragons
  • Cardiff Dragons 0 – 0 London Pheonix
  • Titans Rising Sun 1 – 0 Cardiff Dragons
  • Richmond Arms Falcons 0 – 0 Cardiff Dragons

The Dragons travelled to London with an almost new squad for a challenging tournament against the teams from London and the surrounding area. Conor, Simon A and Simon D all made their debuts in Dragons colours, whilst Leanne, Simon E, Lewi and David K had only played a handful of games before this event.

Last year we came to this tournament and finished 12th, scored 1 goal, got knocked out on penalties and won no games, but we did gain invaluable experience and learnt a lot from the day. This year we ended in similar style, finishing 12th, scored 1 goal, got knocked out on penalties but we did manage to break our duck and win a game, for the first time at 11-a-side against a decent Leftfooters side.

The aims of the day were to bed in the newer players, led by the more senior players, and give them experience to take forward into future events and matches. We also aimed to improve our performance throughout the day. We intended to be solid throughout and improve our individual and team performance as the matches went on.

The day started against the stronger Falcons side, losing 0-1 but putting in a solid performance throughout, our defence breached when a low shot from Falcons found the corner early on.

The day took a turn for the worse when for the second time in two weeks we got battered by Trowbridge. Poor defence allowing 4 goals to get through from the nippy new side.

We went off and did some tackling practice as we weren’t strong enough at times to keep out running forwards.

In the next match our performance was a lot better and much more solid as we kept out the Leftfooters. We also started to pick up our passing and Simon E, going through the middle, managed to cause havock in the Leftfooters defence eventually scrambling a well deserved goal to take the lead. The Dragons won 1-0, making a good comeback after the Trowbridge defeat.

We faced Stonewall next, whom had beaten Trowbridge and Titans Rising Sun and seemed a formidable opposition. We played some of the best football we have produced in recent weeks and at this tournament, Simon A, John A and Christian linking up well. We were solid and we were making half-chances for ourselves. It looked like we were going to get a respectful 0-0 until in the dying moments James Nelson shot from distance for Stonewall, his shot going through the Dragons keeper.

For our penultimate group game we faced a physical London Pheonix side. We were solid once more, David Keith excellent at centre-half, but we couldn’t find a way through and the game petered out in a passing shower. 0-0

Our final group game saw us play host side Titans Rising Sun. Having literally just come off the pitch, and overall played 110mins by this point we looked tired, conceding early on to a run through the middle. We managed to hold our opponents out for the rest of the match, Leanne excellent at right-back in this match. But we couldn’t find enough to significantly trouble the Titans keeper and get a goal.

So, it was for the second time in 2 years a 11th/12th playoff. This year we faced Richmond Arms Falcons. We again had no rest and again looked tired out on the pitch. In an even game, both sides created half-chances, but no team could find the net. We played well in midfield, Simon A, Lewi and Crispin all did well and had plenty of the ball and emphasis, but we really lacked the final ball. 0-0 it finished, penalties.

  • Dragons Pen 1 – Anthony hit bar 0-0
  • Falcons Pen 1 – Scored 0-1
  • Dragons Pen 2 – Christian down middle 1-1
  • Falcons Pen 2 – Scored 1-2
  • Dragons Pen 3 – David K bottom left 2-2
  • Falcons Pen 3 – Scored 2-3
  • Dragons Pen 4 – Lewi skys his kick 2-3
  • Falcons Pen 4 – Scored 2-4 winners

Everybody who went appeared enjoy the day and the event as a whole. We had a great attitude all round and a good team spirit. We did improve our individual performances as the day went on, though we did also tire towards the end of the day. Overall a promising, solid day with many so new faces on show at national level.

Many thanks to all who travelled and competed, and of course Richie and Jordan who cheered us on throughout.

Trowbridge Tigers 8 – 2 Cardiff Dragons

Dragons Team: Kris, Muzz (Manager), Ed (Capt), Jason, Leanne, Aris, Dave F, Adam, John A, Mark, Stefan.

Sub: Dave A

Due to circumstances beyond our control we only had a bare 11 plus myself to go to Trowbridge with for the important cup game.

It was always going to be an up hill struggle with only 11 players and Trowbridge were always going to a tough game away.

With Anthony away with his family Ed took on the captaincy for the day. Leanne was also making her debut for the Dragons. After 20 minutes we were 3-1 down and Aris had to go off unfortunately after picking up an injury which meant Dave A makings his outfield debut for the club up front.

Trowbridge took the lead on 10 minutes with a penalty, the Dragons equalized on 11 minutes through Stefan, Trowbridge went back in front on 15 minutes with a well taken strike and went further ahead on 20 minutes after yet another penalty going against the Dragons.

By this time the Dragons were finding it tough to break down a well organised Trowbridge side and they added 2 further goals before half time 5-1 at half time.

Ten minutes into the 2nd half and it was 6-1 to Trowbridge. Aris by then had tried to run off his injury and returned to the pitch for Dave A. There were 2 further goals for Trowbridge before the Dragons got a goal back through Ed in the 89 minute. Final Score 8-2 to Trowbridge who deserved to win on the day and we would like to thank them for there hospitality after the game.

The management were very disappointed with the result but it has to be said every Dragon on the pitch tried their best on the day but unfortunately it was just not good enough.

The management would like to thank Jordan for recording the game and Richie for his support on the day.
