Exeter Lions 7 – 0 Cardiff Dragons

With the Dragons playing in the GFSN national league and the cup it was decided that the South West league games were going to be development games for the whole squad, giving every player within the club an opportunity to gain valuable game time which is vitally important in the growth and development of the club.

Exeter got off to a solid start scoring on 5 minutes they doubled that lead on 8 minutes after a defensive slip up by the Dragons. It was never going to be easy being two nil down after 8 minutes but the Dragons in true Dragons spirit kept on battling. Exeter were applying a lot of pressure in the first 30 minutes but the Dragons were coping well after the initial disappointment of going 2-0 down. The Dragons started to make progress by getting wide and putting some useful crosses into the box but unfortunately with no end product. On 37 minutes after a corner kick Exeter scored there 3rd goal and that’s how it remained until half time.

Second half Christian replaced Kris in goal who went up front with Simon and Luke and Richie came on for David K, and Daren. The Dragons started off bright in the second half and looked to create themselves an opening to get back in the game but that was not to be as on 53 minutes Exeter scored there 4th goal. On 65 minutes Exeter made it 5-0 after a break from a Dragons corner. But still the Dragons never gave up and chances were being created that on another day may have gone in the back of the net. Before the 90 minutes were up Exeter added 2 further goals to there tally making the final score 7-0 to the Lions.

One final note it was great to see our former chairman Ray Wilson who now plays for the Lions we wish him all the best at the Lions.

Cardiff Dragons 0 – 1 Brighton Bandits

CARDIFF DRAGONS 0 BRIGHTON BANDITS 1

The Dragons were very unfortunate to end losing a game that could of gone either way as both sides were very evenly matched.

Team:- Kris, Muzz (Manager), Anthony (Capt), Jason, Christian, Paul, Dave F, Sam, Simon, Crispin, Mark.

Subs:- Aris, John A, Daren.

The match kicked off with the Dragons applying some early pressure Anthony putting in a good corner that caused problems in Brighton box. Mark making some good early runs but Brighton withstood this early pressure.

After the first 10 minutes Brighton were starting to pass the ball about and had caught the Dragons on the break a few times. Then on 12 minutes after a defensive laps by the Dragons Brighton broke through down the centre of field and scored a well worked goal giving Kris in the Dragons goal no chance.

The Brighton No 9 was causing the Dragons problems with his runs in the first half but the Dragons held firm with some excellent defending from Muzz and Cristian who were very strong in the tackle. The Dragons were unlucky on 40 minutes when Jason hit the cross bar from the edge of the box.

The Dragons had a lot of possession in the first half but were unable to break a very well organised Brighton side down. Kris was called into action just before half time and made a good save to ensure the score remained 1-0 to Brighton at half time.

Muzz made 2 changes at half time replacing Jason who had been solid all first half at right back with Aris, and Simon making his league debut for the Dragons doing some good work down the left midfield with John A.

The 2nd half started off much like the 1st half with the Dragons having a lot of possession with some good early interlink work between Aris and Sam down the right side. The Dragons were creating chances but with no end result. After a foul on Mark a well worked free kick caused problems in Brighton box but was dealt with by there strong defence. After some good work by John A down the left Dave F shoot just went over the cross bar from close range. The luck was not on the Dragons side today. There was more good work from Sam down the right who was running at there defence but were unable to capitalise on our possession. Paul was also finding his feet more in the 2nd half and made some telling clearances as did Muzz and the rest of his defence throughout the match. Crispin held the ball up well at times and had some good touches. Anthony played in a few great corners late on in the game that went begging.

On another day the Dragons could of scored 4 or 5 but it was not to be and the game ended 1-0 to Brighton.

The management would like to thank David Keith once again running the line for us. Also a special thank you to Jordan for recording the game and Matt L and Ali for taking photos. We would also like to thank all the support we had on the day it was fantastic I will try to name you all now if I missed anyone out I apologise as there were so many supporters. Here goes thank you:- Dave Kelly( Chairperson), Ali, Amy, Richie, Luke, Chris, Connor, Simon, Daren, Adam, Jerry, Jordan, Matt L, Adrian, David K, Marks Mum, Marks girlfriend and I think that was it.

Committee News

We had a long committee meeting on Sunday with lots of important decisions made so please read. Minutes will soon be available on the website. To start amessage from the Chairman, Dave Kelly;

“Hi Dragons! Well, what a few weeks it’s been!  From the fun of the Fundraiser to our fantastic Mardi Gras event, the high of Bristol to the our disappointment in Leicester, we’ve experienced the whole run of Dragons emotions over the last month.

Firstly, this is a huge, huge thanks to everyone who took part in both the fundraiser and Mardi Gras for the club. As you know, money and people are required to make any club a success, and these events generated both in abundance! We raised almost £400 from the fundraiser, we’ve donated £120 to the Terrence Higgins Trust from all of this year’s fundraising activities, and we gained 40 potential new members for the club! The biggest thanks must always go to Jon B, who (as our finance and fundraising secretary) organised and ran both events with extreme professionalism. Well done!

It’s important with all the good that’s going on within the club that we all focus on making sure the basics are going well. Something the club needs everyone’s help with is making sure our assets are protected. We currently have a SUBSTANTIAL kit shortage for pieces that haven’t been returned after matches, and we’re going to have to replace them if they aren’t returned before this weekend. The current bill to replace missing kit is running to approximately £140, money that has to be taken directly from that which would otherwise be used for training, match fees, reducing subs or away travel, etc. We are missing two blue and two red shirts, plus several pairs of shorts and socks; if you have any kit that belongs to the club, please heed this amnesty!! From this Sunday’s match on, there will be a much tighter system used to control the issue and return of kit.

Now, to the future. Following on from the first full committee meeting of the season on Sunday, a few key decisions have been made that will affect the membership. The two that stand out as those that most affect everyone are the restriction of membership to those over-18 and the reduction of away subs to £4 (more about this later). It is crucial that you read the meeting minutes to understand our reasoning behind each of these decisions – which will soon be on the revamped website – however, if anyone has any questions immediately, please feel free to discuss them with me directly. After the next meeting, we’ll also be letting you know details about a new player code of conduct, which will incorporate aspects of the GFSN league rulebook, which is available from the league website and you absolutely need to have read if you play in league or cup matches.

Finally: have a great week, and… GO DRAGONS!

Dave”

Finance

Next onto some good news from our treasurer Dave Keith;

+++ Change to Subs Policy +++

As you all know, members were consulted recently about how the money collected at fundraising events should be used. One popular response to the survey was to use funds raised to reduce subs. At our Committee Meeting yesterday, we therefore approved a proposal that player matchday subs for this season be reduced to £4 per person. This takes effect from this Sunday’s game against Brighton. The reduced rate will apply to all home and away matches thereafter. Training subs remain at £2 per person.

The reduction reflects our policy of using funds raised at events like the recent Player Auction to cover the costs of things that you, the members, want. Please therefore continue to get involved in supporting the Fundraising Team’s efforts. The more we raise, the more we can feed back benefits to everyone.

There are more exciting uses for the funds in the pipeline, so keep an eye on your weekly emails over the next few weeks for further announcements.

General

Following on from comments from our members we have decided that from now on;
No non-player is to be in the changing rooms before or after matches unless at the managers discretion (e.g. assistant manager).
As well as this after match, priority for food served is to go to those who have played first, before supporters.
If you have any comments to make regarding this or wish to discuss it please grab a member of the committee who will be more than happy to help.

Press and Marketing

Over the next few weeks we will be looking to get player profiles for the website. The first set of photos for these were taken on Sunday with more to follow. Keep an eye out from an email from Jordan with the questions for the profiles and watch out on http://cardiffdragonsfc.co.uk/?page_id=6 for when these go live.

Dragons Weekly Bulletin – 8th September 2010

News

What a long weekend!!! Saturday was Mardi Gras. The Dragons were out in force promoting the club. We had a stall which gathered lots of interest (albeit, a lot was about Amos’ sheep!!) We also had a friendly kick about with people outside, with Christian conceding a lot of goals against a 2 year old!!

We had an amazing 30 people sign up for more information about the club and to show an interest in coming along to training this Sunday. Hopefully most will come along and it would be great if all of us are there to show them what the club is about. You never know, one of them could be the next Ronaldo!! A massive thank you to John B, Jordan and everyone who helped out on the day.

Sunday saw us travel up to Leicester for the annual Leicester six a side tournament. Both teams applied themselves well and were unlucky not to make it out of their groups. A big thank you to all those who travelled, especially the drivers, many of whom were out on the Saturday at Mardi Gras. See football news for more details.

Over the next few weeks we will be looking to get player profiles for the website. Jordan plans to start taking photos for these at Sundays training session so make sure you make yourself look pretty!!

Over the coming weeks, we will be looking to revamp the weekly email. What would you like to see? How would you like it set out? Please send your thoughts to myself ( secretary@cardiffdragonsfc.co.uk ) All comments are welcome.

Recent Matches

6-a-side – Sunday 4th September 2010 – Leicester 6-a-side Tournament – Leicester

Dragons Red –  The Reds were unfortunate not to progress from their group of 6 with 2 wins, 1 draw and 2 losses from their 5 games missing out by 1 point to finalists Nottingham who’s 1-0 victory over us proved crucial. The Reds however created many opportunities scoring 5 well worked goals in their final 3 games scored by Mark (3), Anthony and Crispin with a fine turn and shot for his debut goal.

Dragons Blue –  In a very tough group the Blues battled hard throughout to gain 2 draws against Leicester Reds and Bristol but fell short of progression. This however was an improvement from last year in terms of points gained and also in the number of goals conceded, only 5 in their 6 games.  A valuable experience and learning curve for all those involved.

Football Tip of the Week

Social

Saturday 2nd October – Rock climbing at Boulders indoor centre (Newport Road)

This is an alternative to the Go-Ape (which is quite expensive but details below) and will provide great team-building opportunities.  This is an indoor venue just off Newport Road.  The plan is to go down in the afternoon and it will cost about £12 per person – Details TBC closer to the time.

Friday 22nd October – Ten Pin Bowling (Cardiff Bay)

The last time we went bowling we had a great time; this is a fun and relaxed evening.  Details and times will be confirmed closer to the time and we will book an alley (or 2).  If you are interested please let me know so we can gauge interest.

Wales Qualifier Match

Jason Cousins (Local GFSN Regional Representative) will liaise with the GFSN and try to organise an official GFSN event where hopefully we can get some regions down to visit us; this will be great as we will get to see some familiar faces and show everyone how friendly us Welsh are and a good time!!!  This is likely to be for the October qualifiers.  Keep an eye out for communications on this; as soon as we hear back from Jason/GFSN you shall be informed.

Go-Ape

This can go ahead if you wish but we need your commitment if this is to go ahead.  Having researched into this and it costs £30 per person and would be a perfect team building opportunity.  The only thing is that they need full payment upon booking and they cannot give us a date until we book.  If you would like to go please let me know but note we will require full payment before we book and it is only then that we would be able to supply a date; as you can see there are complications around confirming this event but I am willing to go ahead with it if there is enough interest/commitment shown.

Fundraising

Firstly I’d like to thank all members for taking part and attending the recent Player Auction and Mardi Gras activities.  So far we have manged to raise £480.08 since I took on the post. Dave Keith has provided a break down of what what we have achieved.
Car Boot £54.50 Easyfundraising £19.61 May Lotto £9.00 June Lotto £11.00 Jul/Aug Lotto £8.50 Aug Fundraiser £377.47 Total raised = £480.08 25% of this will be going to THT. Dave Keith has written a cheque to them for £120.02 which he will be sending shortly.

There is a committee meeting next week.  I have asked Dave Kelly to agenda spending as an item.  I will be taking the results of the fundraising questionnaire that was emailed to you all a few weeks ago so that we can identify areas where money raised can be spent.

Thanks
John

Mardi Gras Plans

That time of year is upon us again, when thousands of people will descend on Cardiff tomorrow for Mardi Gras!

This will be the 3rd year that the Dragons will be in attendance, and this is our biggest year yet!

The plan is to meet at the Kings Cross at 11am, and then have a gentle wonder over to Coopers field where the Dragons have a stall this year.

We’ll be using the stall to advertise and recruit new members, and generally have a good time.

A few of us will be over the field early getting the stall set up, and we’ll be manning it throughout the day. Drop by to say hello 🙂

We’ll be wearing the Dragons tops around Mardi Gras again. We’ll have some tops with us, but it’ll be a great chance to wear your own top if you have one.

If you have any questions, drop one of us a message, or a quick text.

Otherwise, see you all tomorrow, and let the good times commence!
