Cardiff Dragons 0 – 2 Yorkshire Terriers

The Dragons returned to League action with a well contested encounter versus visitors the Terriers and were unlucky not to take anything from the game on the day. Due to inclement weather leading up to the game the match had to be switched to an astroturf surface which was a total change of conditions from Dragons previous fixture versus Falcons.

The first half started very brightly for the Dragons with the first ten minutes seeing most of the play in their opponents half however it took a while to adjust to the fast pace of the surface resulted in limited chances early on. The first real opportunity of the game saw the Dragons win a free kick 25 yards out but although the kick needed to be re-taken twice the Dragons could not profit as a firm shot from Mark just wide of the near post was the closest attempt. The Dragons continued to dominate but were caught out midway through the half when a shot from the edge of the area bounced back into the 6 yard area and with the hosts slow to react Yorkshire’s centre forward headed in from close range. This did not deter the home side though and they forced a succession of corners throughout the half. They almost equalised from one of these when Anthony’s inswinging corner was palmed away from the goaline but Alf could not profit from close range as the chance went begging. At the other end a couple of dangerous crosses from the flanks nearly caught the home defence out but no Yorkshire players were able to connect with these as Yorkshire went into the break 1-0 ahead.

The second period saw John A come on as substitute with the Dragons again starting the half brightly having a half chance to equalise early on when Mark was put away down the left following good link up play with Ed but he was unable to keep down his shot from the edge of the area. Chances continued to come for the Dragons with some good link up play Chris C shooting over from a 25 yard free kick and Anthony with a volley over the bar. Both Aris and Kris were introduced with 20 minutes remaining and further corners and half chances ensued but the visitors defence ensured nothing came from these. Yorkshire defended resoloutely throughout and were often dangerous on the break. Following a good tip over by Chris S from a long range effort another break earned Yorkshire a penalty and the second and clinching goal 5 minutes from the end. Although the initial spot kick was parried away well by Chris S the Dragons defence was slow to react allowing a Yorkshire player to bundle the ball over the line for the final goal of the game.

As usual their was a large and enthusiastic support on the day which helped lift the team.

Yorkshire 5’s Tournament

First of all I would like to thank all the Dragons that make the long journey up to Leeds allowing us to enter 2 teams in the tournament. I’d also like to thank Jordan and Kris for their support on the day thank you lads it was much appreciated.

It was great to be able to stay over on the Saturday night to relax before Sunday and my thanks go to both Jason and Muzz for their hard work in organising the availability forms, transport and hotel.

This time last year the Leeds Tournament was the Dragons first ever 5 a side tournament. Even though neither team qualified from the groups we did fantastically well and the weekend was a success. It was going to be very interesting to see how much progress we have made in just 1 year.

Even though from a personal point of view I was really looking forward to the tournament yet again I knew I was struggling with a finger injury picked up the previous Sunday at training.

Dragons Blue: Jason (Manager), Amy, Chris S, Dave F, John A, Lucy, Stefan.

Dragon Blues excelled winning 3 games drawing 1 game and losing 3 games finishing on 10 points and a very creditable 4th equal in their group. They scored 5 goals and conceded only 4. Everybody gave 110% Chris S made some brilliant saves Amy was as solid as ever at the back Dave made some telling tackles and scored 2 well taken goals Lucy’s skill and positioning was excellent as always, John A had some really great shots on goal and his work rate was great as always, Stefan’s movement and skill all over the pitch was fantastic and Jason’s experience and positioning was what was needed from the manager.

Dragons Red: Amos (Manager), Muzz ( Club Captain), Ali, Anthony (Club Vice Captain), Chris C, Ed, Hywel, Mark.

Dragons Reds went through the group without conceding a single goal Ali was outstanding in goal for 5 of 7 group games with the old man Amos playing the other 2 games. Anthony scored 5 goals ending up top goal scorer for the Dragons in the tournament and was solid at the back and even took a yellow card for the team. Muzz captained the side as always giving 110% and never missed a tackle. Hywel scored a fantastic goal on the turn and played solid football down the wings. Ed’s running and skill showed well and he scored a goal. Chris C has so much skill and was able to turn and show that off in the games. Mark scored 2 goals his attacking and defending ability was non stop.

Qualifying for the last 8 of 32 teams was a fantastic achievement finishing 2nd in their group with 15 points. Winning 4 games drawing 3 scoring 9 goals and not conceding a single goal. Last 8 played Romans after another brilliant performance Dragons Red went down 1-0 to the Romans.

All that is left for me to say is that there was no Dragon of the tournament as each and every Dragon can be equally proud of what you achieved well done to everyone you are all the Dragon of the tournament.
